MyCabit vs Uber, Bolt & Edinburgh Black-Cab Rank

Hailing a ride at Edinburgh Airport has four practical options. Here is how a pre-booked MyCabit transfer compares — feature by feature — against ride-hail apps and the metered black-cab rank outside arrivals.

In our own audits across August Festival, Hogmanay and Six Nations weekends, Uber and Bolt surge fares from EDI into central Edinburgh peaked at 2.6× our fixed price, while black-cab metered fares at the same hour averaged 1.4–1.7×. A pre-booked transfer pays for itself the first time it rains on the rank queue.

Why MyCabit

Edinburgh's Trusted Private Airport Chauffeur Service

We are a small, family-run Edinburgh chauffeur company — not an app, not a queue of strangers, not a roulette of black-cab drivers. Every transfer is allocated, monitored and supported by a real human controller from the moment you book until the moment you arrive at your door.

  • Fixed price, locked in

Your fare is calculated and frozen at checkout. No meters, no surge fees at 04:00, no holiday surcharges, no late-night premium. The price you see is the price you pay.

  • Meet & greet, name sign

Your driver waits in the public arrivals hall holding a name sign — no kerbside scramble, no SMS instructions. We track your flight in real time and adjust pickup automatically.

  • Premium Mercedes fleet

Mercedes E-Class saloons, V-Class executive MPVs, S-Class on request, and 8-seater Mercedes Vito tourer minibuses for groups. All under 4 years old, full leather, climate control, complimentary water.

  • 24/7 controller cover

Real humans answer the phone — 03:30 cargo runs, 23:55 KLM arrivals, Christmas morning, snowstorms. There is always a controller on duty who can re-route, escalate or send a backup vehicle.

  • Free 60-minute airport wait

Your driver waits up to 60 minutes from touchdown free of charge while you clear immigration, collect bags and visit duty free. Beyond that, waiting bills in 15-minute increments — not a £10 minimum charge.

  • Licensed, insured, DBS-checked

mycabit Ltd is a fully licensed UK private hire operator. Every vehicle carries hire-and-reward insurance and is MOT-tested on schedule. Every driver holds a current DBS check and UK private-hire badge.

Edinburgh Airport (EDI) — Everything You Need on Arrival

Edinburgh Airport is Scotland's busiest airport — a record 17 million passengers in 2025 (the first Scottish airport ever to cross 17 m) with 130+ direct destinations across Europe, North America and the Middle East. A few practical pointers help most first-time visitors.

Where to find your driver

After you clear baggage reclaim, follow the green "Arrivals" signs into the public hall. Your MyCabit chauffeur will be standing in the central greeting area holding a printed name sign with your booking reference. The walk takes 2–3 minutes from the carousel — exact meeting spot is texted to you while you're collecting bags.

One terminal, simple layout

Unlike Heathrow or Gatwick, Edinburgh Airport is a single terminal — there is no T1/T2/T5 confusion. Baggage reclaim, customs and arrivals all sit on the ground floor; the official taxi rank and pre-booked pick-up zones are signposted from the arrivals plaza. Your driver will already know which carousel your flight uses.

What about the airport taxi rank?

The black-cab and licensed private-hire rank is at the East Terminus, a short walk from arrivals — exit through the plaza by the large "Edinburgh" sign and follow the taxi signs. Rank fares are metered (not fixed) so totals vary with traffic, luggage and time of day, and a pre-booking is now required to use the rank under the council's private-hire licensing rules. A pre-booked MyCabit transfer locks the price at £45 in a saloon, regardless of traffic or time of day, and we meet you inside arrivals with a name sign instead of at the kerb.

Tram & Airlink bus

The Edinburgh Trams (Airport ↔ Newhaven, via Princes Street; extended to Newhaven in June 2023) and the Lothian Buses Airlink 100 (Airport ↔ Waverley Bridge, 24/7) are both excellent if you're travelling light. Adult single fares are around £7.90 on the tram (~35 min) and £6.00 on the Airlink (~30 min). With luggage, two or more adults, or any post-midnight arrival they rarely beat a pre-booked taxi on door-to-door time or comfort — and the tram itself stops running between roughly 23:00 and 06:00 each night.

Driving distances & journey times

EDI sits at Ingliston, eight miles west of the city. Typical airport-to-hotel journey time is 25 minutes (15 in light traffic, up to 50 during rush hour around the Gogar roundabout). We pad all bookings with realistic Edinburgh traffic data — no nasty surprises.

Late-night arrivals

The last KLM, Air France and Turkish Airlines flights routinely land after 23:30. The black-cab queue empties fast at that hour and the tram stops at 22:30 — a pre-booked transfer is essentially the only way to guarantee a calm onward journey.

Cruise & Ferry

Edinburgh Airport to Scotland's Cruise & Ferry Ports

Most Scottish cruise itineraries embark from Leith, Rosyth, Greenock or Invergordon, while ferry travellers head to Cairnryan for Northern Ireland or Oban for the Western Isles. Our airport-to-port transfers are timed to the embarkation window, with a 24/7 controller monitoring your luggage offload and check-in deadline.

  • ~12 mi · 25 min

Leith — Ocean Terminal Cruise Port

Edinburgh's own cruise berth at Albert Dock, walking distance to the Royal Yacht Britannia. Used by Princess, Cunard, Royal Caribbean, Holland America & Saga. From £38 (saloon).

  • ~15 mi · 25 min

    Rosyth Cruise Terminal (Forth Ports)

The Forth's deep-water cruise berth, hosting Saga, Fred. Olsen and the small-ship fleet. EDI → Rosyth is the shortest cruise transfer in our network. From £55 (saloon).

  • ~75 mi · 1 h 30 min

    Greenock — Ocean Terminal, Inverclyde

Glasgow's main cruise port — Cunard, MSC, P&O, TUI and Princess vessels berth here. Cross-country transfer via the M8. From £165 (saloon).

  • ~120 mi · 2 h 30 min

Oban — Western Isles Ferry Hub

Caledonian MacBrayne sails Oban → Mull, Iona, Coll, Tiree, Colonsay, Lismore and Barra. Drop-off at the Railway Pier terminal, two minutes from check-in. From £245 (saloon).

  • ~135 mi · 2 h 45 min

Cairnryan — Northern Ireland Ferry Port

P&O Ferries (to Larne) and Stena Line (to Belfast) sail from Cairnryan. We sync to the 90-minute foot-passenger check-in window and the 60-minute vehicle window. From £285 (saloon).

  • ~175 mi · 3 h 30 min

Invergordon — Cromarty Firth Cruise Port

The Highlands' biggest cruise port — Princess, Holland America, Saga and Viking deep-water berths. Long but fixed-price scenic route via the A9. From £455 (saloon).

Embarkation windows are tight — we recommend booking your transfer at the same time as your cruise so the driver is reserved against your flight number, not the general pool. Disembarkation transfers (port → EDI) follow the same fixed-price model and can be pre-arranged to wait at the terminal exit with a name sign.

Peak season

Edinburgh's Big Events — Pre-Book Early

Edinburgh sells out twice a year — at the August Festivals and over Hogmanay. Add Six Nations weekends and the Royal Highland Show, and the city has roughly twelve weeks per year when airport taxi capacity is genuinely scarce. Booking your transfer alongside your accommodation is the single best move.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe & International Festival

Throughout August (exact dates change yearly). The world's largest arts festival doubles Edinburgh's population for four weeks. Hotel rates triple, ride-hail surge hits 2.5×, and the black-cab rank queue spills outside the terminal. A pre-booked fixed-price MyCabit transfer is the only way to guarantee a chauffeur at 23:30 when the late KLMs land — prices are unchanged from our shoulder-season fares.

Edinburgh's Hogmanay & New Year

29 December – 2 January. Street Party, Concert in the Gardens, Loony Dook and the Torchlight Procession draw 75,000+ visitors. Princes Street is closed to vehicles on 31 December; we hold confirmed bookings on alternative drop-off points and brief every driver on the rolling road-closure schedule.

Six Nations Rugby at Murrayfield

February & March, match weekends. Scotland v England (the Calcutta Cup) brings 67,000 to BT Murrayfield, with hospitality and corporate-box guests flying in from Friday lunchtime. We run airport transfers and stadium drop-offs — 8-seater Mercedes Vito minibuses are the workhorse for hospitality groups.

Royal Highland Show, Ingliston

Third weekend of June. The UK's largest agricultural show — 200,000 visitors across four days at the Royal Highland Centre, next door to Edinburgh Airport. Transfers from EDI to the showground entrance take seven minutes; local taxi capacity is fully absorbed during peak hours.

The Open Championship (Scottish host years)

Mid-July, when The Open is in Scotland. When the Claret Jug returns to St Andrews, Carnoustie, Muirfield or Royal Troon, MyCabit runs daily corporate transfers between EDI and the host course — saloons or executive MPVs for players' guests, 8-seater minibuses for hospitality groups and broadcast crews.

Cruise embarkation season

April – October. Leith, Rosyth, Greenock and Invergordon collectively host 350+ cruise calls per year. Our airport-to-port transfers are pre-allocated to the embarkation window — see cruise & ferry transfers above for fixed-price routes and timings.

FAQ

Edinburgh Airport Taxi — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions before pre-booking. Need anything beyond this list? Reply to your confirmation email or call our 24/7 controller — we usually answer in under five minutes.

How much is a taxi from Edinburgh Airport to the city centre?
A pre-booked private taxi from Edinburgh Airport (EDI) to central Edinburgh starts at £45 in a saloon car. Executive Mercedes are £60, MPVs from £65 and 8-seater minibuses £85. Prices are fixed and include meet & greet, the official airport drop-off charge and up to 60 minutes of free waiting on arrival.
Is it cheaper to pre-book a taxi or take one from the rank at Edinburgh Airport?
Pre-booking gives you a fixed price and a chauffeur waiting in arrivals with a name sign — no kerbside queues, no surge fees, no late-night surcharges. Black-cab fares on the metered rank are unmetered until you set off and typically run higher into Edinburgh once luggage and airport drop-off charges are added; with MyCabit the total is locked in at checkout and shown on your confirmation.
Where will my driver meet me at Edinburgh Airport?
Your driver will be waiting in the public Arrivals Hall, just past customs, holding a name sign with your booking reference. We track your flight in real time and adjust the pickup automatically if you land early or late — there is nothing to confirm by phone, and we text you the exact meeting spot ten minutes before landing.
How long will the driver wait if my flight is delayed?
We track your flight by IATA number and adjust the pickup automatically — there is no fee for a delayed flight. Once your flight has landed, the driver waits up to 60 minutes free of charge while you clear immigration and collect bags. Beyond that, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments.
Do you cover airports other than Edinburgh?
Yes. We offer fixed-price private transfers from Glasgow International, Glasgow Prestwick, Aberdeen, Inverness, Newcastle, Teesside, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool and Manchester airports to Edinburgh, across Scotland and into northern England. Long-distance transfers (e.g. EDI to the Highlands, Skye, Loch Ness, the Lake District or York) are also available — quote on request.
Do you provide taxi transfers from Edinburgh Airport to England?
Yes — cross-border transfers to northern England are one of our most-requested long-distance services. Fixed prices from Edinburgh Airport (EDI) include Berwick-upon-Tweed (from £165), Alnwick & the Northumberland coast (from £215), Newcastle upon Tyne (from £255), Durham (from £285), the Lake District — Windermere, Keswick, Penrith (from £315), York & Harrogate (from £445), and Manchester or Liverpool city centres (from £475). All cross-border quotes include the Tyne Tunnel toll, fuel, parking and full insurance — door-to-door, no train changes, no luggage handling.
How long does the drive from Edinburgh Airport to Newcastle / the Lake District / Manchester take?
Typical drive times from EDI (in light traffic): Newcastle upon Tyne — 2 h 30 min (~115 mi via A1), Lake District (Windermere) — 2 h 45 min (~140 mi via M6), York — 3 h 45 min (~205 mi), Manchester — 3 h 45 min (~220 mi). For longer routes (e.g. EDI → London) we recommend a daytime departure and offer an executive saloon or MPV with a single comfort stop included. Driver hours and DVSA tachograph regulations are observed on every cross-border run.
Do you do cruise port transfers from Edinburgh Airport?
Yes — cruise transfers are one of our specialist services. Fixed-price transfers from Edinburgh Airport (EDI) cover every major Scottish cruise port: Leith Ocean Terminal (£38), Rosyth Forth Ports (£55), Greenock Ocean Terminal (£165), Invergordon Cromarty Firth (£455). We sync to the embarkation window, monitor luggage capacity, and provide a meet-and-greet name sign so cruise passengers walk straight from arrivals to the car. Disembarkation (port → EDI) transfers follow the same fixed-price model.
How long is the drive from Edinburgh Airport to Cairnryan ferry port?
Edinburgh Airport to Cairnryan is around 135 miles (217 km) via the M8, A77 and A75 — typically 2 hours 45 minutes in light traffic, longer at rush hour. Our fixed price for a saloon is £285, MPV £345, 8-seater £425 — all-in, including fuel, parking and full hire-and-reward insurance. We time pickups to the Stena Line (Belfast) and P&O (Larne) check-in windows; the route from Stranraer to Cairnryan ferry pier is the final 5 miles and is included.
Can you do Edinburgh Airport to Oban for the Western Isles ferry?
Yes. The drive from EDI to Oban is ~120 miles via the M9, A85 and A82 — about 2 hours 30 minutes through Stirling, Crianlarich and Tyndrum. We drop off at the Caledonian MacBrayne Railway Pier terminal in central Oban, ready for ferries to Mull, Iona, Coll, Tiree, Colonsay, Lismore or Barra. Fixed price from £245 in a saloon.
Do you cover Edinburgh Festival, Hogmanay and Six Nations weekends?
Yes, and pre-booking is essential for these dates. During the August Fringe & International Festival (throughout August, exact dates change yearly), Hogmanay (29 Dec – 2 Jan), Six Nations (Feb–March match weekends), the Royal Highland Show (late June) and Open Championship Scottish years (mid July), Edinburgh taxi capacity tightens dramatically. MyCabit guarantees a confirmed chauffeur, a named car and a fixed price for every booking made at least 24 h ahead — no surge, no holiday surcharge, no late-night premium.
Are child and booster seats available?
Yes. Infant (0–9 months), toddler (9 months–4 years) and booster seats are available at £10 each per journey, subject to vehicle. Please request seats during checkout so we can fit them before you land.
How do I pay — and can I pay in cash?
All bookings are confirmed online with a card payment via Stripe. We do not take cash for pre-bookings — this protects both you and the driver and means there is nothing to settle at the kerb. Receipts are emailed automatically, and VAT-style invoices are available on request for business travellers.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please tell us as early as possible if your plans change. Cancellations and amendments are handled in line with our Terms & Conditions; inside 24 hours of pickup we may retain an administration fee of £10 or 10% of the booking total, whichever is higher. Genuine flight cancellations are always rebooked or refunded in full at our discretion.
How many passengers and how much luggage can I bring?
A saloon car carries up to 3 adults + 3 large cases; an executive MPV (Mercedes V-Class) up to 6 adults + 6 cases; an 8-seater minibus up to 8 adults + 8 cases. Oversized items (golf bags, ski gear, bicycles, surf boards) must be declared at booking so we can allocate the right vehicle.
Do you offer corporate accounts and monthly invoicing?
Yes. We run dedicated chauffeur accounts for hotels, law firms, film crews and corporate travel buyers in Edinburgh. Single-invoice monthly billing, named cost centres, dedicated account manager and 24/7 controller cover are all included. Contact us at info@mycabit.com for terms.
What if I can't find my driver at the airport?
Call or WhatsApp our controller — the number is on your booking confirmation and we are on duty 24/7. We always know exactly where your driver is. In the unlikely event we cannot reach you, the driver remains in arrivals for the full free-waiting window before calling again.
Can I book a return Edinburgh Airport transfer at the same time?
Yes — and we recommend you do. Return bookings are pre-priced together so there are no surprises, and we automatically allocate a driver who knows your flight schedule. Round-trip discounts apply on selected vehicle classes.
Do you do early-morning and late-night airport pickups?
We operate 24/7, 365 days a year — including 04:00 pickups for the first wave of long-haul departures and post-midnight arrivals from the late KLM, Air France and Turkish flights. There is no night surcharge.
Is your service licensed and insured?
Yes. mycabit Ltd is a fully licensed UK private hire operator. All vehicles carry hire-and-reward insurance, public liability cover, and are MOT-tested and serviced on schedule. Every driver holds a current DBS check and a UK private-hire badge.
Can I add a sightseeing detour on the way into Edinburgh?
Absolutely. Many of our airport guests add a Rosslyn Chapel, Forth Bridges or Stirling Castle stop on arrival day before checking in. You can extend any transfer into an hourly chauffeur charter — just add hours during checkout or message us to build a custom itinerary.
